With this opera, he paints a frightening picture of human civilisation.” So says Frank Hilbrich, the German director of Don Carlo, the work to open ChristianFest which can be considered the essence of the thematic season.

Ifj. Johann Strauss egyik legnépszerűbb műve, A cigánybáró a Jókai200 emlékév keretében kerül színpadra a Budapesti Operettszínházban. A darab 1885-ben, a Theater an der Wienben aratott először sikert, amikor a zeneszerző Ignaz Schnitzer librettójára komponálta meg nagyszabású operettjét Jókai Mór Szaffi című elbeszélése nyomán.
Alen Menken, Stephen Schwartz és Peter Parnell varázslatosmusicalje Victor Hugo ikonikus regényéből, a Disney rajzfilmje alapján készült. A darab érzékenyen mesél a szeretetről, a kitartásról és az önfeláldozásról. Esmeralda, a szegény cigánylány és Quasimodo, a torz külsejű, ám önzetlen harangozó története könnyeket csal mindenki szemébe.
A többféle feldolgozást is megélt alapművet most Grigori Frid egyszemélyes operaváltozatában ismerhetik meg a Budapesti Operettszínház nézői.
